Our Mission
Lifeguard™ is a Public Benefit 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 93-3581481) founded in 2023 after the Lahaina fires in Maui, where 102 lives were lost. Our mission is urgent and clear: to save lives by empowering communities to fight fire before it spreads out of control.
What We Do
- Deploy Firehose Boxes: We install secure metal boxes at fire hydrants in at-risk communities. Each contains a nozzle, wrench, gloves and firehose(s).
- Train Communities: Instructional videos and proficiency quizzes at firelifeguard.org/recap-quiz ensure community members know how to safely use the equipment.
- Build Preparedness: We encourage neighborhoods to host Lifeguard™ Firehose Box Events, where residents gather, learn fire basics, including the use of a Lifeguard™ unit of and support one another.
- Designate Local Lifeguards: Each box ideally has a dedicated community member—a “Lifeguard”—who maintains it and distributes keys when needed.
Our Founder
Oregon resident, Tim Loyd, a 30-year mechanical engineer, founded Lifeguard™ after seeing the devastation in Lahaina. His technical expertise and determination uniquely equip him to design, assemble, and deploy the Lifeguard™ system worldwide.
Our Focus
While wildfires rage globally, the organization’s initial round of fundraising will support installation of secure hose boxes in areas of Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Utah beginning in Q4 2025, with a long-term plan to expand nationwide and ultimately worldwide as resources allow. Each box features a scannable QR code that connects users to a short training video and quiz, giving communities the confidence to act safely and effectively when every second counts.
